SUNDAYS x DAYLIGHT SAVINGS

(Harbour Town Golf Links 2016)

Sundays x Daylight Savings

I find myself writing this post during an early Sunday morning shift at the course while reflecting on how I should be in Church.

Today marks the first day of the year where Daylight Savings is in effect. The promise of warmer weather, longer days, and earlier sunrises ensures calm in the winter locked golfer lusting to dig some dirt. Many of us find ourselves making off season equipment changes and additions which are surely going to solve our woes despite the previous years unsuccessful efforts. This hope and search for improvement keeps us all coming back for another hit, full junkie mode initiated. However, this year I challenge myself to embrace the journey that is pursuing mastery in a sport in which cannot be mastered. A certain beauty exists in this venture to do the impossible. A coveted fraternity of the attempt has become the modern day golfer.

Previously mentioned, I work in the golf industry and am fortunate enough to see firsthand all that goes into successful golf operations. Undoubtedly countless hours of work culminating over years of experience and weathered grounds, golf courses are the adult amusement park providing a safe haven of escape from the everyday stressors of life. As the trees around us grow taller as each season passes we fail to recognize the daily efforts made. Our golf games prove no different and this year I intend to embrace the everyday monotonous acts required to incrementally improve as much as hosting the accolades themselves.

As a young one growing up with full access to a private golf facility near my house I failed to appreciate the luxury afforded to me by my parents. In retrospect I benefited from the sacrifices my father made with his time in order for me to pursue a different life than he. Many fathers are course superintendents, general managers, directors of golf, golf professionals, etcetera, and they are forfeiting time spent with their loved ones so you and I can enjoy our round of golf. I don’t include this for guilt inducing purposes, rather just to pay homage to the efforts put forth so that we can play the game we adore. Gratitude and Ichi-go will forefront my approach to the game this year. What words will forefront yours?
